Language is a very complex system that can be broken down into three parts: form, content, and use. Form means how language is put together. It includes how sounds are made and organized in order to form words. It also includes how words are arranged in order to form meaningful sentences. This is known to many of us as grammar. Content basically means the meaning of words and the ideas those words represent. Use refers to how language is used to tell others our thoughts and feelings. Language is most commonly expressed through speech, but it can also be expressed in many other ways such as body language, writing, sign language, computerized devices, and gestures. |
