Derek Sherrange Named Post Star’s 2018 Teen Excellence Honoree

Derek Sherrange, son of James and Betty Sherrange, has been selected as one of The Post Star’s 2018 Teen Excellence honorees. Derek was nominated for demonstrating outstanding leadership and service to school and community.

He has traveled to Honduras several times with his family. Witnessing the extreme poverty made Derek keenly aware of the global needs of others and inspired him to make a difference. He has also participated in the World Food Prize New York State Institute, a program for high school students with an interest in global food insecurity and the fight against hunger. There, Derek wrote a paper summarizing his research and recommendations. His paper was reviewed by judges was one of four students chosen to attend the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute in Des Moines, Iowa. Derek’s experiences have helped him develop an interest in international law, communications, and humanitarianism. Derek and the other area Teen Excellence recipients will be honored at a breakfast in March 2018.
