On January 24th, a local artist, Eric Johnson, visited Argyle Central School to display an original Willem de Kooning painting valued at over $300,000. Johnson was hired to frame the artwork from a private collector, before it was shipped to New York City, New York, for purchase.  The presentation was coordinated by Argyle Central School art teacher, Rick Fleury.

Willem de Kooning was a post World War II abstract expressionist artist from the Netherlands. De Kooning is an esteemed member of an artist group known as The New York School, alongside Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Richard Pousette-Dart.

“This is a once in a lifetime, amazing opportunity,” said Sara Wadsworth, a Sophomore in Fleury’s Studio Art Class. Classes observed the painting, learned of de Kooning’s history, and joined in an open discussion on abstract expressionism and surrealism.
