Staff members at Argyle Central School District have collaborated to create colorful “movement pathways” on campus as a place for students to take constructive breaks from the classroom. The movement pathways aim to improve focus, balance, hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and sensory/neuromotor skills in students.
Studies have shown that quick movement breaks throughout the day help keep students focused, on task, and engaged for classroom learning. The pathways we have created not only develop motor skills but help those who need to calm down, recharge, and organize their bodies. The paths are especially popular during times when student focus tends to wane, particularly around mid-morning or post-lunch.
The movement pathways have floor and wall decals for students to hop, crawl, and skip, and consist of several exercises that stimulate the body and brain. They are comprised of positive messages and provide opportunities for creative and structured movement, self-regulation, social skills, and use of motor skills.
